Lehigh Valley Writing Project To Host Annual Conference

The Lehigh Valley Writing Project (LVWP) will host its annual Best Practices in Teaching Writing Conference: Access for All from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley.

The conference will feature interactive workshops and presentations for teachers to share professional teaching practices. Cris Tovani will be this year’s keynote speaker.

Tovani’s career has been spent trying to figure out the “knowing-doing” gap. Researchers tell teachers what they should be doing, but actually doing it with 125+ students is a whole new ball game. Throughout her career, Tovani has tried to take reading and writing research and apply it to all levels of learners. She loves sharing her success and failures with colleagues around the world so they too, can better serve students.

Recently named ILA’s 2017 Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader, Tovani is an internationally known consultant focusing on issues of reading, content comprehension and assessment in secondary classrooms. She has been an adjunct professor and is the author of four books, “I Read it but I Don’t Get It,” “Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?,” “So, What do They Really Know?” and “No More Telling as Teaching: Less Lecture, More Engaged Learning.”

The cost of the conference is $65. For Lehigh Valley Writing Project Fellows, the conference cost is $45.  Registration includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Prepaid registration is required. To register for the conference, or for more information, visit the conference website or contact Diane McAloon at 610-285-5066 or  dul11@psu.edu.
