Lehigh County Holding Local Census Logo Design Contest

Lehigh County Partnering with Allentown High Schools to Develop a Locally Recognizable Census Logo

(Allentown, PA)- Lehigh County is partnering with Allentown High Schools to help it develop a fresh and modern logo that will be utilized as part of its campaign to increase census participation.

The 2020 United States Census is quickly approaching, and Lehigh County is committed to ensuring that everyone is counted, counted once and counted in the right place.

Allentown, Lehigh County’s urban hub, has dealt with significant undercounting in the past.  The previous 2010 census resulted in an undercount of nearly 30% which cost Allentown about $2,089 per person.

As part of its campaign to drive greater community engagement, Allentown is looking to students in Building 21, William Allen and Dieruff to design a logo that will help convey the importance of completing the census.

Lehigh County will be utilizing the logo for its census communication campaign.  The county will be working with a multitude of local partners to cultivate a recognizable, accessible and well-communicated campaign that ensures equitable and inclusive participation in the census.

The contest winner will receive $100 and their logo will be revealed at the June 12th, 2019 Board of Commissioners meeting.

“Our school system, especially in Allentown represents an effective way of breaking down traditional census barriers and ensuring we clear up fears and misconceptions about the census.  The Allentown School District is a valuable partner in getting to a complete count, and tapping into the creativity of a diverse body of students represents one way of to help put forth a positive public awareness campaign for the census,” said County Executive Phillips Armstrong.

The Census helps determine how $675 billion in funds are awarded. A 2010 undercount cost Pennsylvania almost $222 million in funding or roughly $1,796 per person.
