Allentown will celebrate military veterans in November during Veterans Appreciation Month!

A kick-off event will be held on Saturday, November 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Seventh & Hamilton streets.  It will include a static military vehicle display, participation from veteran-serving organizations in the Lehigh Valley and beyond, music, food and a flag raising ceremony scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The kick-off event will be preceded by Red, White & Blue Night business specials beginning on Friday, November 1, and continuing throughout the month from participating businesses.

Flags and banners recognizing veterans will be hung on Hamilton Street, Hamilton Boulevard, Union Boulevard and Susquehanna Street.  Opportunities are available for businesses to sponsor a veteran banner.

The city is partnering on the celebration with the Allentown Police Department Honor Guard, the Allentown Fire Department, Lehigh County Veterans Affairs Office and PPL Veterans.

Mayor Ray O’Connell said, “The message that we deliver all month is to acknowledge that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.  We appreciate their service and thank them for their contributions to preserving our freedom.”

PPL Corporation, AARP, City Center Allentown and Alvin H. Butz, Inc. are celebration sponsors.

The city invites businesses across the city to send information to events@allentownpa.gov with their discounts for veterans for publication in the city’s program booklet.

The city is developing a calendar of other events held throughout the month to be set up at www.allentownpa.gov/veterans. Events held in the city or events run by an Allentown organization can be submitted at events@allentownpa.gov.
