Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Berks) issued the following statement in reaction to Gov. Tom Wolf’s 2020-21 budget proposal, which seeks to increase state spending by $2 billion:

 

“I continue to support no new taxes and a balanced budget that is completed on time. That is what Pennsylvania citizens want and that is what I fight for each and every year. The governor has outlined a plan that seeks to increase spending and limit business growth. Those are concepts I simply cannot support. The rate of spending is simply too much and would saddle future generations an unacceptable debt.

 

“We need to put more money into the Rainy Day Fund for future economic downturns and constrain spending to be in line with inflation and population growth. We also need to find ways to reduce waste, fraud and abuse in the system and eliminate redundancies. I do support continued targeted funding for education, and workforce development in particular. This is an area that will help propel more young people into quality, family-sustaining jobs here in the Commonwealth.

 

“The next step in the budget process will be hearings in which the House and Senate members hear from the various state agencies and what their financial wants and needs are. After that, all parties will come to the table and work on a final budget that protects taxpayers and reins in the excessive spending proposed today by the governor.”
