Chamber Calling for Delivery Apps to Lower Fees; Hurting Local Restaurants

Lehigh Valley, PA: Third party delivery apps like Uber Eats and Grub Hub charge restaurants approximately 25%-30% in fees for using their platform. That means some may barely break even on orders placed through these apps. While restaurants can opt out of using these apps, it would put many at a competitive disadvantage. The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber wants to see the use of these apps become affordable for restaurants so they serve as they were intended; to support these small businesses and provide a service they don’t typically have access to.

Tony Iannelli, CEO & President of The Chamber said, “We understand third party delivery apps, in many cases, serve an important need to our restaurant community across the Valley but we’d like them to come to the table and negotiate more acceptable rates.”

“Especially during this time of crisis, some restaurants are barely breaking even due to the high commission percentages. We have restaurants closing down and at risk of closing down and need to fight for them.” said Angela DelGrosso, Senior Vice President of Bethlehem Initiatives for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber recently launched a #CallforCurbside campaign to encourage people to call restaurants directly to place their orders. This ensures restaurants receive 100% of profits from customer’s orders. While this is a temporary solution, they hope the third party delivery apps will agree to lower commission fees.

The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber has recently signed on to a cover letter and package, created by local business owner of El Jefe’s Taqueria, John Schall, which will be sent out to Chambers across the nation to inform them of this issue and encourage them to join our campaign for lower commission rates.
